January 2017 USPS® changes

January 22nd brought significant USPS changes. Some highlights
include:
  • Standard Mail® renamed to USPS Marketing MailTM. The complete transition is anticipated to take 18-24 months.
  • The 3-digit sortation for automation letters has been discontinued. Those pieces are now merged into AADC trays.
  • An Optional Endorsement Line (OEL) is required on each piece of FSS (Flats Sequencing System) mail. A code appears at the end of the OEL reflecting the rate paid.
  • Pieces in FSS bundles will no longer get a single FSS rate. They will get the rate they would have received if they were not in an FSS zone.
  • Postage statements (PS Forms 3600, 3602, 3541, 3605--all versions) have changed.

Unusual USPS delivery method

One of the most unusual delivery methods performed by the USPS is mail delivered into the Grand Canyon via mule train. Each mule carries about 130 pounds of mail, food, supplies and furniture down the 8-mile trail to the Havasupai Indians at the bottom of the Grand Canyon, averaging 4,000 pounds per day.
