Each year approximately 43 million prospects and customers permanently change their place of residence. Roughly 62% of these movers stay within the same county and another 20% stay within the same state. This means that they will likely remain or become your customer if you continue to reach them with your communications.

The NCOALink Database

Postal customers file a permanent change of address with the USPS® by filling out a permanent Change-of-Address (COA) card and handing it to a postal clerk or dropping it in the mail or submitting the information online. This information is then sent to the USPS National Customer Support Center in Memphis TN. (Temporary & seasonal moves are not part of this system.) The data is compiled, address data is standardized and data quality checks are performed. The data is then added to the NCOALink database. This database contains 48 months of permanent change of addresses that have been filed with the USPS. The typical profile of the new address information contained on the NCOALink file is as follows:

  • 80.92% are forwardable moves (provide new address information)
  • 1.18% are unconfirmed new addresses - new address not yet available
  • 13.8% are moved, left no forwarding address - no new address information
  • 3.92% are PO Box closed - no new address information
  • 0.18% are foreign moves - no new address information
